Carpeted Stair Safety Checklist
Print this page or save as PDF. Follow your clinician’s weight-bearing instructions.
Before you start
- Practice on 1–2 steps with a PT or trained helper.
- Have a spotter nearby until you are confident.
- Use closed-toe, non-slip shoes (no socks alone).
- Confirm treaded tips are secure and not worn.
Step order
- Going up: Strong leg → injured leg → crutches.
- Going down: Crutches → injured leg → strong leg.
- Keep tips mid-tread, away from nosings and edges.
Handrail setup
- Use one crutch + handrail when possible.
- Pause at landings to reset posture and breathing.
- Turn on landings with both tips planted; move one crutch, then feet, then the second crutch.
Weight-bearing reminders
- Non-weight bearing: Keep injured leg off the step; use seated bump if needed.
- Partial weight bearing: Touch down lightly; let rail + crutch carry most weight.
- Full weight bearing: Follow standard pattern; still use rail + one crutch on carpet.
When to stop
- If you feel dizzy, unsteady, or in pain.
- If the carpet is wet, loose, or damaged.
- If you have no rail and no spotter—switch to seated bump or wait.
